GIVE YOUR FIREPLACE A NEW LOOK - In this article we'll look at giving your prefabricated fireplace a new appearance. The main difference, with the exception of the actual construction of the fireplace, is how the fireplace sets on your wall. A brick front fireplace will protrude the depth of the brick, giving a sill for the mantel to set on. A prefabricated may have a hearth placed directly on the sub-floor, with three panels glued to the wall. As with any fireplace makeover, follow your local building and fire code for distances from the firebox. A beautifully made over fireplace is no good if its not a safe one.
PREFABRICATED FIREPLACE - If you hate the face of your prefab, the panels can be removed and granite slabs can be installed to give the fireplace a completely new look. Another option would be to tile the surrounding area of the firebox. A mantel is optional in either case. Of course, if you're happy with the overall appearance, a floating mantel can be installed on the wall. Let's look at a couple options below.
Fireplace on the left - This was a very standard, drab fireplace that consisted of a flat, black surround and hearth. All was removed and redone in four pieces using 1 1/4" thick granite. A floating mantel was purchased, stained, and installed at the top of the granite. The fireplace makeover was a spectacular improvement. Fireplace on the right - This prefabricated fireplace was finished for a southwestern theme. This is a flueless fireplace that runs on natural gas. It can be installed on any wall as long as a gas line can be supplied to it. As always, check with your building department. The fireplace was finished in ceramic tile using an accent border. There are three types of tile used in this project. The wall tile was bordered in wood and painted to match the room's moulding trim. Notice there is no mantel on this project. What you decide to do with your fireplace and how far you decide to take the makeover is completely up to you. Add an accent color to the wall to provide a dramatic effect. Finish off the area with some new fireplace accessories or a free standing screen. There's nothing like a crackling fire on a cold winter nice to make one feel all warm and cozy.
